Look at the RPO code tag in the glove box, or on the end of the driver's door.

GU2 = 2.73

GU5 = 3.23

What year is it?

I don't think the Shift Plate thing has anything to do with what gears he has.

The A4 cars all have a trans that shifts 1-2-3-OD, but the cars with the 2.73's have a shift plate on the console that does not have a "1". "1" can be accessed by trimming the plastic stop off.

Ya it's just a stop made of plastic. You could always do the wheel revolutions vs driveshaft revolutions test.
