How Hot Do Headers Run??
How Hot Do Headers Run??
Yeah, yeah, I know, which headers, what are engine mods?
I don't need an exact number, just a ball park...give or take a 100 degrees.
Reason I ask is that I currrently install 1.6RRs in my LT1 and covered them with some aluminum valve covers. There were SUPPOSED to be stock height, but I found out they're about 1/2" taller. I have Taylor OVTC wires installed. So, on the passenger side, the plug wires to the last 2 plugs is basically touching the headers (SLP shorties). They're weren't a problem with stock valve covers since they were shorter.
So in the meantime before I get new wires to run these (2) towards the back of the engine block...I have some heat shields in their right now. Not sure what they're rated for. Looking on Thunder Racing's website, they got fiberglass heat sleeves rated up to 1200deg F. That sounds like a heck of a lot...don't think the headers get that hot. But wanted to know if anyone actually knew how hot headers got in the LT1s.

Re: How Hot Do Headers Run??
At idle the surface temperature of a header will be in the 600 to 700 degree range. Under hard throttle, the header can get hot enough to glow red, which is in the 1200 to 1400 degree range.
Re: How Hot Do Headers Run??
Header temp at idle using a heat gun is 3-400* on my car. Gets much hotter under load and high rpm.
If the wires are touching the header tube, they will burn, even with a heat sheild. There needs a to a little airspace

Re: How Hot Do Headers Run??
3-400 sounds somewhat low: My EGTs all show idle temperatures in the 700 degree range at idle. Do you think that there could be a 300 degree difference in header surface temperature and exhaust gas temperature? However I'd think it's safe to say that headers are hot enough to melt anything that's plastic and silicone rubber is probably in danger at temperatures greater than 600.
Re: How Hot Do Headers Run??
Yeah...going to address it..trying to find out if Taylor sells their 8mm wire in singles, with the opti boot installed. I have this issue on 2 wires, so rather not buy the entire OTVC kit from Taylor, if I only need 2 wires. Else, worse case I buy the kit and have extras.
For now, just need a "bandaid". A local shop says they have some Taylor sleeves that are rated at 1500F. I'll try that for now, but I'm not convinced that will work long term, since the wires are still contacting the header..there will be some heat that goes through the sleeve....hopefully not enough to melt the silicone.
Oh well...I'll just have to watch for my buddy, the SES light for misfires.
