How to get Ignition coil off bracket ?!?!

My MSD 8231 Ignition coil arrived today and I couldn't get the stock Coil off the bracket it attaches to with the ignition module!! Looks like it's welded on because the 2 screws holding it on to the bracket don't even look like screws.

At first I thought it should come with a bracket but when I went to Autozone for a Borg Warner coil, it also just came coil only no bracket.

Has someone done a coil replacement before? Thanks...

It's riveted on to the bracket. You can either grind them off, drill them out, or file them off in a pinch. Your new coil should come with nuts and bolts to mount it.

Also pull the whole bracket and coil off as a unit and do it on a bench. Not sure if that was clear in my first post.

I found this install guide awhile ago. It's a pretty simple procedure, but I guess it could be confusing. The pics in here should really help you out.

Unbolt the bracket and coil assembaly from the engine, then grind off the heads of the two rivits (things that u said didnt even look like screws, cause they arent) and knock them through with a punch. The new coil should come with screws to reattach the new coil. BTW once you seperate the bracket there is some grease between the two parts, dont wipe it off, its not really grease its some kinda heat transfer compound that helps cool the ignition module thats also on th bracket (little box with fins on it)

Good luck, its really not that hard, and make sure the coil wire fits on snugly, if it isnt it could fall off while your driving, like it did on mine.

That's when you said "Damn, I've never seen mould that feels like this!" It's the same stuff on your computer's CPU if you've ever messed around with your PC.
