How do you change the front seal on a 97 LT1?
How do you change the front seal on a 97 LT1?
I have my Z in pieces to change the opti and clean everything up, it looks like my front crank seal is leaking a little, how does that cover come off with the end of the crank the way it is?

You dont have to pull the cover off to change the seal. Only the crank hub. Once you get it off it is pretty easy to pry out the sean. Then use a large socket or even a piece of pvc pipe to install it by GENTLY taping on the end of the pipe or socket. Tip for you, cause i did it twice
Make sure you install the opti seal 100% dry as well as make sure the sealing surface on the opti is oil free. That is if you are doing an opti seal. Which would be a good idea if you are this far into the motor. Do a search for a post done by me about leaking opti and it has the Felpro kit part number, you get all 3 seals and the waterpump gaskets. Like $13

Basically yes. But with the hub you can not just slap a puller on there. It has like a "cap" (for lack of better words) on the end of it. So you will be pulling against itself. You need to push against the bolt (that has ben backed out a couple turns) or use an extension or something to push against the bottom of the bolt hole. If you get what i'm saying? Basically there is a opening in the hub just big enough for the bolt to go through and that is it. So you cant just slap on a puller without something inside the hole to push against.

Got it off Tim, thanks, how exact does the hub need to go back on? is there anything else I should do there white this is off? 100K motor?

Yes go to your local Oreily's (if you have one) and ask for a replacement timing chain. It should be made by Cloyes (sp?) or something close to that. For about $25-$30. Splap it on. Well on second thought you dont have to I didnt think about you not having to pull the cover. But they are known to wear out/get loose. Mine at 115k (just did a cam last week) was very loose. But if you do that it will be a bigger job. You will have to replace more seals and such..... I guess that would be up to you. That water pump drive seal can be a booger!
Re: How do you change the front seal on a 97 LT1?
Oh and to put the hub back on. What I did was clean everything up as good as possible. Line the hub back up the SAME way it came off. You should be able to see a mark where it was in relation to the keyway slot. I taped it on easy with a hammer for just a LITTLE ways. Then took over with the bolt and tightened it to put the hub back on. You just want to make sure you have a few good turns of the bolt (say 7 or so minimum?) before you start pullin it on or you could booger up the threads. And make sure all is clean including the bolt threads so nothing get's jamed up and causes you to strip that bolt. You dont want that!
