How Do These Machining Costs Look?

Well I was ready to take my motor to a newer machinist today, but he didn't seem like he wanted my buisness and he couldn't balance my rotating assembly so I called a place here in Wisconsin by the name of Performance Engine & Machining ( www.perfengine.com ) and heres the break down that he gave me....

Balance rotating Assembly...$200
Bore & Aglin Hone...$24 per hole or $192 all together
Remove Old Pistons & Install New Pistons On Rods...$32
Remove Cam Bearings & Freeze Plugs & Install New Ones...$56
Hot Tank Block...$80

For a grand total of $560

What do you think of these prices? The other guy was going to charge me $415, but that wasn't balancing the rotating assembly.

Personally I don't think they are too bad and this guy has built some bada$$ LT1s before, but I have to wait until the 16th of this month to take it up to him since hes moving into a new place. Kind of sucks, but that will give me some time to get my mail order tune and some misc parts that I need.

Can't comment on the quality of the work, but the prices are quite reasonable.

Yes their work is very good. The 2 guys that I know swear by them and they both are high HP nitrous cars and haven't had any problems as far as machining goes. The only thing that I don't like is having to wait until the 16th to take my block up there, but at least it will be done right. I'm also waiting on a few odds and ends so its not that bad.

BTW I live in south western Wisconsin near Richland Center, Eau Claire is a good 3.5 or 4 hour drive, I can't remember but iits a ways LOL

Prices are better than mine were.

Most shops that are actually in the business of doing this stuff can get the job done. I have heard of a few strange cases, but you should be pretty safe.

Also keep in mind, its tax season so people are getting money back, and race season is firing up. This is the worse time of year to go to a machine shop. I too had to travel a bit further because my first choice was backed up 3 months this time last year.

Yeah I hate to wait until the 16 to take the motor down to him, but he said he'd be able to get to it right away in his new shop. Right now I only have 10 days to wait and I'm getting really impatient LOL I just want to get this thigh running again
