how to beat a stock LS1?

I have a 97 Z with a 6 speed and 3.43 gears. i installed a 52mm throttle body, CAI, jet module, cat back, 160 thermostat, coolant bypass, 17x11s. i can keep up with the avrage LS1, sometimes beat them in first gear, but by 3rd im back about a car length or so. Im not shure what to do next, i dont want NOS. shuold i do a 4.10 and hooker headers or a cam and headers or somthing els. i dont want to spend to much money, and i am not to worried about emissions

ls1 are top end screamers, so your going to need to improve on the high side of the tach. Hooker LT, and a cam should do it with a good dyno tune.

I think headers should definitly be your next move. I can hang with LS1's with my mods, pretty even, I haven't run any real competition or gone to the track since I added headers, but it's a nice gain.

Hot cam and even Stage One heads should put you even with, past a bone stock LS1.
That was my exact quest when I popped my stock LT1. I added an LT4 Hot cam and home ported heads(I did the porting. First time effort). With bone stock exhaust(Cast Iron manifolds all the way back to stock tips, but gutted cats) and dyno'd at MTI with 340+ rwhp. I added Slp headers and a single cat (and redyno'd at 330ish ). Taking it to the strip with stock sized Firestone Firehawks and 3650 lb raceweight, I ran consistent 12.8's at 109 mph. All with 1.9 sixties. This was in good February air at Houston Raceway Park. I had a six speed at the time as well as stock 3:42 gears. Get a CC224/236 cam and headers and you can run even better, even with stock heads.
Here's my LT4 Hot cam at idle
Sounds pretty good thru headers, no cats, Borla XR1 Muffler

Ls1's are unbeatable! .......Put a set of long tubes on it and you should run w/ an ls1 our better...My 98 ws-6 went 8.40's at 84mph BONE stock on Drag Radials.

About two weeks ago I ran a stock SS. I launched softer than normal and he launched good, but since I have the 315 nitto's I still pulled him out of the hole. We shutdown at 100 and I still had about two cars on him, and he never gained back an inch. That was my first run with an ls1 since I got the headers. They used to always pull back on me or be pulling back. Get some headers!!!!

My car--97' Formula A4 with: free mods, CAI, SLP shorty headers, 18" bullet muffler and dump before axle, 3.73's, weld wheels with 17x11's and nitto drag radials out back, LCA's and panhard rod.

CAM!!!!! Go for the rollin' bump-stick!!! cc 305 should do just fine!!! mean enough for the strip but tame enough to feed (engine) for a trip! My buddys got a 99 SS, stock with only a whisper lid, car went 13.5! Pretty good right? well tthe first night i got my cam in i took him for a ride and the first thing he said to me (after doiin a few WOT shifts) "Dude...this thing is faster than my LS1" and thats from an LS1 guy, so yeah a big to the cam install!!!

I hope he thinks your car is fast. With your mods you should easily be able to run better than a 13.5!

Ohh, and the cam won't do crap without headers.

dispite (sp?) your attitude i'll reply...When i bought my car i knew it was rated at 285HP stock, however I am realistic bout ratings. I knew that that was first off flywheel HP so the car @RW was probably more like 265 HP or so, and with 103k on it it i would expect it to run probably around 14.1-14.3 range. My friends car was pretty much STOCK runnin 13.5, i don;t know what ur car ran exactly STOCK but i know for damn sure it wasn't 13.5! It was really more like 16.7 or so, NOT to knock 3rd gens (i personally love them) but i know what they were capable of stock and its really not immpressive. As far as a Cam without headers, i honestly don't know. I would assume that by putting headers on it it would definetly help the cam but a cam just by itself is gunna be a big difference no matter what! If ur going with a bigger cam, that means bigger cam=bigger lobes=longer time lifter rides on lobe=more longer valve hang time=more air and thus equals more power (i.e. torque)

3rd gen is gone. I now have a 97 Formula. Sorry if I sounded like I had attitude in that reply. I'm just saying with your mods you should be able to spank a stock ls1. Hell I can, and I'm an auto. I've seen dyno graphs of people running cams without headers and getting less that 10rwhp gain from the cam. I just think headers would be a better investment than a cam. Once he gets headers then a cam would be great.
