Hitting Rev too soon?!?

My car has started hitting the rev limiter too soon its hits it now at around 5-5200. It only does this at WOT, if a pull it down in gear and run the RPMs up it wont do it. The tranmation doesnt sshift enough until i let off. Could this be the TPS or what?

Re: Hitting Rev too soon?!?

i think what buzz is saying is that if your tack is way off, it is in fact hitting the rev limiter at a much higher rpm (like it should be). Now if you can tell by feel that it isnt rapping out like it used to then you seem to have a problem.

that doesnt mean a thing...just like speedos there are designed to be more accurate on the lower side since thats where they'll spend the majority of their time...the only way to find out your real rpm is w/ a quality tach or logging

Re: Hitting Rev too soon?!?

The tach being off would have nothing to do with an A4 hitting the rev limiter.

Started doing it out of the blue, or have you done work on it recently?

Re: Hitting Rev too soon?!?

Just out of the blue I put a set of underdrives on it but after that it did fine thats the last thing i did to it, other than changing the oil and uses a thicker weight.

Re: Hitting Rev too soon?!?

Just to be clear - if you accelerate at part-throttle, you are able to get to redline in 1st, but at WOT it stops accelerating around 5200 rpm?

If that's the case, it sounds more like an engine problem than a tranny problem.

Just to cover the basics - enough ATF? fresh ATF?

Re: Hitting Rev too soon?!?

Ok today i just held the gas down and its NOT hitting the rev it is knocking in the engine sounds like its hitting the rev buts a knock because the rpms climb but much slower. Its not the trans cause that was my first thought and i took it to a trans shop and they said the trans was fine it was something in the engine. So i recently change the wieght of oil in my car could this becauseing me to float a valve because ive noticed one of my vavles has been ticking alot more lately. I run 93 octane in it so its not the gas.

opti was replaced six months ago. ANd would the fuel pump work fine at low rpms and stop at high?

Re: Hitting Rev too soon?!?

Could the knocking be a lose timing chain getting out of timming in upper RPMs?
