High mileage LT1

My in-law gave me a 1997 Z28, with 186,000 miles...drives smooth, shifts fine, no oil burning, etc... I need to drive it cross country I would like to know what will I need to replace engine wise...i mean i dont want to go all out crazy and buy alternator, fuel pump, starter, opti, wires plugs...etc etc
Should i just buy a low mileage LT1 from Ebay?

Are you meaning as basic maintenance, or what you can expect to break in the near future?

I've got 195K+ miles on my '94 Z-28, and, although my oil analysis is showing my bearing wear rates to be increasing, she runs just fine. No oil consumption, 21 mpg combined, etc.

If you're looking at going cross country, I'd change out all the fluids before making the trip. Check the brake pads for thickness, throw in a bunch of CDs (or an mp3 adapter), and have at it!

Last thought, check the tires for sidewall cracking; be tough to get halfway and have a blowout due to a too old tire (5 years is what I've told is a good useful lifespan).

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

always make sure your accessory belt isnt dry rotted before going on long trips. Its cheap insurance to put a new one on even if its not.

Blackstone Labs is a national analysis business; I've used them for several years now. Contact them at www.blackstone-labs.com for some sample kits. The analysis costs $20 each, IIRC.

Have a good one,

depending when it was replaced, if it even was...the water pump would scare me going across country, that and the thermostat. A new water pump is not that expensive compared to what it will cost if you got stranded somehwere and is relatively easy to swap. Mine when at 143,xxx.

Did the previous owner save any of the old maintenance receipts? With that amount of mileage, I'm sure the car has needed some basic work done to it. If you can get ahold of the records, you would at least know what has been repaired and what you might need to replace in the future before going cross country.
