High compression, what starter?

What starter you guys running?

My alt/starter guy went throught this one(stock) and said it was in good shape and should work fine.

Well it will hardly turn the engine over at all, have used 2 batteries, and also done it with the charger hooked up....

stroker motor with around 14 so do I need a starter or what?

Also with the fire off when I spin it over it will barley turn it

I suppose this has stopped you from getting a cranking compression reading??

A stock L99 starter turned over my motor just fine with 230psi cranking compression. The L99 starters are the old style BIG heavy beasts without gear reduction. I used it till like 170K miles when I broke the solenoid tightening a wire.

Have you upgraded the wiring? a more powerful starter wont help if the wiring is stock small gauge.

my friend rebuilds starters & alternaters for a living, he said the lt1 vettes have much better starters. you could possibly look into that.

I have 0ga wire going to a ford solenoid then a 18" pc. of 0ga going to the starter and the GM solenoid is jumped.

It turns slow but but it started the other day....now it won't spin fast enough

Napa shows the vette starter as the same part number.....You must mean a LT4 gran sport starter......If I need to go that route I wll just get a racing starter. I was hoping this one would work.....I'm on a shoestring here.

My cranking compression is not going to be much....I don't think, b/c the cam

I have one of those old big truck starters but it won't fit, no way for it to clear the header

I use a digital7 ignition box to retard the startup timing(15 degrees or so)
starts up very easy with the stock starter
however my compression is only 13.6:1

well I'm getting the same thing with no ignition at all.......so maybe I need to see how many amps I'm pulling, B/C its the same either way
