Diagnosing no start problem
Diagnosing no start problem
Hey guys, so my current situation is an extension of this thread:
http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=545659
Anyways, its winter break and its time for me to get this damn car running before I get busy again. I need to diagnose the no start problem and try to trace it back to either fuel/spark and then find which component is bad.
To check fuel, do you just hook up a fuel gauge to the fuel ral and check fp? What should the fp be when the key is in the on position and the car isn't running. What about when cranking? Finally, what kind of bleed down should there be if any?
As for the spark, I have the delteq setup, but I assume I can diagnose it the same way I would if it wasn't there. Is there a process to follow? Where do you go after the plugs/wires on a delteq system? Is there a procedure I can follow to check the opti, coil, etc?
Thanks guys, its hard enough having to work on the car in the apartment complex, I'd really like to have a good idea what to look for since I'll have limited time to work on it before security starts hassling me.

Don't forget the basics.....
We would like to know what events lead upto the problem...Changes, repairs, incidents, mods etc...
That having been said, for fuel you want to check 2 things. Pressure should come up to about 40 psi give or take while cranking. Since it doesn't start, don't worry about what it should be while running for now. The other thing you want to check is injector pulses with a noid light.
After cranking, you should be able to hold near cranking pressure for over 20 minutes. If it does not hold, it could be a problem if injectors are leaking or it may not be problem if the fuel pump check ball is sticking. Don't worry about that for now.
Now move on to spark. A SBC will not run with 3 spark plugs not firing. So be sure to check at least 6 for spark. With your delteq it will be easy to check.
If at that point it still doesn't run, you have a few ways to go. I would check compression. Since the 3 things required are fuel, spark and compression to fire up. You could also try squirting fuel directly in the intake while it is cranked over.
If you confirm you have fuel, spark and compression. The only answer at that point is the spark must be occuring at the wrong time. At that point it may be worth while to go back to a stock set up.
It also would not hurt to check for DTC's.
