Helped a friend do a intake manifold gasket and couldnt believe his car ran....PICS..
Did he buy this car new? If he did, the asshat hasn't been changing his oil often enough. If he didn't maybe the asshat that owned it before him didn't change it. BTW, stop leak crap might do that but I doubt it. If an engine is really leaking that seal swell stuff won't fix it.
Someone needs to put some Rislone in that thing and run it for about 20 minutes really hard and then change the oil. I would then change it every 1000 miles for about the next 5-8000 miles.
Use a good oil such as Mobil Drive Clean and it will remove that pus from his engine.

From some of the old timer mechanics I've heard them say "Oil is oil unless it's Quaker State". And what they meant by that was it really didn't matter what brand of oil you bought so long as it wasn't Quaker State. Supposedly Quaker State sludges up real bad or at least it used to. I'm pretty sure they have changed their formula though? Either way, he didn't happen to run Quaker State, did he?

My dad used to have an Olds station wagon that Quaker state got a hold of for 1 too many years! When we popped the manifold off, it looked kinda like the above pics. Goop Galore!

and it's quite common with that brand ven with regular oil changes.

TRUE - Quaker State oil was known to sludge an engine really bad.
FALSE - Pennzoil does not!!!
Looks to me like the oil was never changed regularly.
I ran a 350 in my old 67 RS cranking over 500 hp for 3 1/2 years with nothing but Pennzoil. when I pulled it down, you could have eaten out of it - clean as a whistle.

lol, well this wasn't to be taken so literally... at least not from my comments.
I've seen the same thing in alot of engines. Seen Penzoil do it... seen Q-state do it too. Point is it's not all just the oil's fault. As someone else mentioned, short trips, really cool thermostats and alot of other things really seem to help the sludge problem. At least from what I've seen. That's purely speculation on my part though.

I'll second that. I've ran both Penzoil and Quaker State. I've had better luck with the Quaker state, had a van go in excess of 225,000 miles on Quaker State which I bought from a freind. That's all he ever ran. Haven't had that much luck with the penzoil though. But my cars are usually used and I think it depended more on the care taken before me. BTW My Formula only get Molbil 1.

From what I heard 35 years ago, Quaker State used a parifin base to thier oils and parifin is wax. That is the gunk!
So an engine getting hot then cold and cycling over and over did leave wax deposits.
I thought QS changed their formular, but apparently not.

Just to add on the Pennzoil/Quaker state. My father runs a fleet of School buses and in the late eighties we had a consitent problem with our rebuilt gas engines taking a crap in the first 5,000 miles, he switched to Quaker state and never had one go out after that. It was 10w-30 bought in bulk. Pennzoil advertised a special wear agent, forgot what it was called, I think it started with a P, but that was the problem. We had the oil analyzed after it was run in the rebuilts, both Pennzoil and Quaker and it was determined that the Pennzoil was the problem.
