help! VERY VERY loud scraping noise from engine bay

This just happened while driving. I had the music up, I felt something like 2 thumps in the car, turnd the music down and there is a very loud scraping noise coming from the engine bay. It sounds like something scraping on a metal plate or something. It is VERY loud. The car has the same oil pressure as before the noise, it runs perfect just like before, same power, no stumble, everything is the same except this noise. any ideas?

See if you can isolate where the noise is coming from. You can use real long blade screwdriver as a stethoscope. One ear on the handle and the tip on whichever part you want to listen to. If you touch the part that's noisy, you'll know it. Listen to your water pump, alt (especially the alt), ac compressor and anything else that's belt driven. Just for safety sake check the 3 bolts (5/8") that hold the harmonic balancer on. I've read of those backing out before.

I will speculate here:
Altonator
Water pump
Timing set rubbing front cover
Oil pump drive

To isolate it to an accessory take the belt off and start the car. That will tell you if its internal or not.

Also have a look at your flywheel cover to be sure it's not damaged and rubbing on the flex plate/converter.

check torque converter bolts? Is sound erratic or is it constant with the rpm's?

This happened to me on My Jeep Wranger once.

I was working on the radiator and dropped a vital bolt on top of the engine. It never hit the floor and I never could find it when reinstalling. Several months later I had this god awful scraping sound coming from the motor, loud as can be.

This missing bolt worked its way down behind the balacer and wedged itself in so what I was hearing was the balancer scraping the bolt. The exact same thing happened once when a rock got crammed in there did the same thing.

Look around your balancer.

The bearing in the V belt tensioner pulley could be going out. They tend to squeal and chip. Noise from that bearing is easy to isolate, but you need to have the car jacked up to access it.

When the clutch on the A/C compressor in my old 94' went out, it made a horrendously loud scraping noise.

Bingo, exactly what it was. two of the 3 bolts on the torque converter came completely out, and the last one was on loosely. I couldn't believe it. the protector plate over it had dings in it where the bolts would slam into it. This is not something I was looking for, just got lucky and found it. How in the hell they could have came loose I have no idea.
