Help replacing wp seal on the timing cover

My opt spark had oil and I had a bad oil leak.
So I fixed the opt spark ans started up just to make sure everything was fine before I put the water pump back on and the seal on the timing cover for the water pump is leaking bad.
Is there a way to replace that seal with out pulling the cover off?
I see that there is a slit on the top half of the cover it looks like if I get a good strong little screwdriver in there I might be able to pry it out.
Any body got any ideas I don't want to drop the pan for such a small thing.
Thanks

Chris

yes you can pry that seal out with a screw driver clean the surface very well and install a new seal.

I used the end of a fat sharpie to install the seal without damaging the inner part of the seal. Some people have used a deep socket as well, that did not work for me

EDIT: Make sure you don't forget to install that little gear coupler back on the WP drive shaft like I did.lol

looks like you still have the coupler in there, you will need to pull that out.

I just used the first flat head screw driver I found. Put it in at an angle, tap it in and pry it out. A small pick works great too.

I'll post up some pics in a little bit.

I saved these pics when I saw them on an impala forum long time ago.

Pry out the seal

Make installation tool, and install seal(use motor oil on seal and tool)

Pound in the seal with a socket.

Make sure you line up the dowel pin on the opti when re-installing it and make sure it goes all the way in.

the seal goes in DRY, but lube the INSIDE of it along with the installation tool.

well when I try to put the seal on the inside lip does not fit the shaft.
it bends the lip out.
insted of keeping it's shape.
What the heack can I do.

The sharpy you used is too small in diameter.

find something BARELY bigger than the shaft so the seal can stretch a little and as you push it in, it'll slide right on the shaft.

well I got the seal in and it riped but it's not leaking yet.
I'm not going to take the chance so I will have to get a new seal tomorrow.
I guess my sharpie was too small it went over the shaft but where the seal sits the shaft is bigger so when I put the seal in the inside lip of the seal that is facing the engine pushed out.
Is that right or does that lip have to sit back like any other normal seal.
Ogg I'm boned.

the lips should be facing out.(one facing the waterpump and on the other side facing the block)

sorry cant think of any other way to explain it

so the lip pushes out toward the front of the engine.
When I got the seal the lip was pushed toward the engine.
Thats what it did on mine but it riped.
