Help with multiple trouble codes

Ran my 1996 on a friends Actron OBDII scanner today, came up with 6(!) codes:

0133
O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

P0153
O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 2 Sensor 1)

P0410
Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction

P1641
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) Control Circuit

P1642
Vehicle Speed Output Circuit

P1661
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) control circuit

The AIR injection and O2 sensors i can see, i just replaced my exhaust, and installed new 02 sensors with brand new ones. I am giving it the benefit of the doubt of being an old code, not worried about it now. My AIR is not currently hooked up, so i can see that one.

What confuses me are the speed control and the MIL lamp control circuit ones? I get no SES light, and my speed is spot on from what i can tell? I do get this weird ticking noise behind the gauge cluster once in a while, but i just chalked it up to having 107k on it..

Any ideas??

I deleted the codes now, and will check it again in a few days to see what has returned.

Thanks in advance,
Tim

Re: Help with multiple trouble codes

According to my list:

P1641 = Primary Cooling fan relay control circuit.
P1642 = Secondary Cooling fan relay control circuit

Most likely the O2 sensors are "stored" codes. Did you clear the PCM when you installed the new sensors?

The missing AIR system should trigger an SES light. Is it on?

You seem confused on the meaning of the P1641 and P1642 codes. What list are you using?

P1661 could be a blown SES bulb. That would explain why the light isn't on for the "active" codes.

Re: Help with multiple trouble codes

Check the #7 fuse underhood (25amp) for both fans and the AIR pump.

Watch the instrument panel lights the next time it's started to see if the SES light comes on and then off.

Visually check the O2 wires for spots that may have rubbed or burned through.

Re: Help with multiple trouble codes

Well, i scanned the car yesterday evening and it kicked back three codes instead of 6.

I get both O2 sensor codes, and the 1661 MIL lamp control.

No, the SES light does not come on, and now that you mention it it doesn't come on when the ignition gets turned to "on" either. I'm thinking either a burned out bulb or a fault in the wiring. Now that i think of it, there was a wire to the PCM i saw when installing my stereo that had been cut before i bought the car. Maybe the light ticked someone off enough to snip the wire? I'm not positive what wire it was, i have a haynes manual and will check it there or on shoebox's site.

Both O2 sensors are brand new, and the passenger's side sensor connector did suffer a little heat damage due to a friend's careless wire routing. Ceramic coating helps, but not that much I'll get under to check it when i have time tomorrow morning.

#7 fuse is good. The air pump comes on and does it's thing when i first start the car, and the fans come on, but only when they want to. I also forgot to mention that i have a manual fan switch installed because the fans have a mind of their own. Sometimes the fans will come on at the correct temperature, and other times the temp will get very high before they turn on, if at all. I'm at a loss on that one... With the manual switch i can flick them on as needed.

Thank you for your replies so far, i will find out what wire was severed next, see if that sheds light on anything. If i remember off the top of my head, it might have been orange wiht a white stripe? I'll have to look.

Thanks,
Tim

Re: Help with multiple trouble codes

The manual fan switch can set the codes. Go to Shoebox's page for the work-around to eliminate that problem.
