Smile Help me pic my next mod please

I have a stock '97 Z28 M6, except for a K&N CAI. I'm the only owner of the car, and it has 53,000 miles on it. It's my daily driver in the spring/summer/fall. It runs strong still, but I would like to add some more power.

I want this to be my daily driver, so anything that will kill my street drivability I don't want.

Here are the things I'm considering:
Long tube headers (do these gain me anything with a stock exhaust and CAI?)
Cat back system
Larger throttle body
1.6 Roller Rockers
suspension mods for rear end traction
3.73 gears

What would you do first? I don't want to tear into the engine at all yet. The car is still in mint condition. I've used Mobil 1 since about 6,000 miles. Here's a pic.

'97 White Z28, T-Tops, Leather, Loaded, except traction control

Thanks in advance.
Dan

Dont get a larger TB. That would be a waste of money. Headers would be good, a gear, cat back system, and 1.6 rr's sound good.

If you had to pick one, I would go for the cat back system. It would add power and sound awesome. Headders sound good too. I agree thoguh a larger tb wouldn't help much. You only need that if you're planning on getting over 350HP

LT1ponykilla,

Thanks for the reply. Great looking Z28 in your sig by the way.

So you think headers first? Can I use LT's with a stock exhaust, or would I need to get a custom Y-pipe and cat back? Is there any reason to get LT's if I don't change the rest of the exhaust too?

Red96LT1,

What cat-back do you like? I've heard good things about corsa's, hookers, and GMMT. I don't like raspy exhaust tones at all. I like the sound to be rumbly and not crackly at all.

Dan

Cut your cats off, get a Flowmaster, shorty headers.

I persoanly think that FLP Long Tubes are the best headers.. and they come with everything you need to install them and you don't need to change your exhaust (unless you want too) However their qaulity will put a little bit of a hole in your pocket I think they add something like 20-30 HP on a stock engine?? But I really don't know that for sure, so don't quote me on it!

Check them out here at Thunder Racing (scroll down the page a bit)

And if you're not looking to spend that much.. I would definatly reccomend AS&M or Hooker headers as well.

Go

If your constrained on money, then i would personally get the longtubes first and get a cutout until you get enough for a catback. Then i'd go for gears and some good rubber to keep ya planted. Also a pro 5.0 shifter would be a good mod although ya wont get any hp. Do some free or nearly free mods too...like the 160 thermo and fan switch, tb bypass.

Well if you don't like rumbling exhaust, Flowmasters might not be for you. I like it, so that's what I have on my car. Borla is very good, but kinda on the expensive side.

I'd also say if you want rumble, dont get flow's. Flow "roar" as oppose to rumble. If youre on a budget, Hooker or Dynomax..

I agree with a post about 3 up from this.
Get some headers and a cutout.

I'm not on a budget, I just want to know what my first mod should be. Thanks all for the input.

Looks like LT's win hands down. Has anyone had problems with non coated LT's being too hot?

I'd worry less about heat and more about rust.

Pay the extra and get them coated definatly... I heard some bad things about non coated heads.. stuff like them metling things and rusting like crazy... just save yourself that problem and do it right the first time.

Are the Jet Hot LT's always coated? I heard they are copies of the Hookers, and have seen that you can find them for about $450. Is that coated?
