help with knock sensor troubleshooting!!!

I used shoeboxes site to test the knock sensor in my 97. I have an OBD1 conversion. According to the test, KS ohm for 96+ should be around 100ohm for my car. It measured 99.8, good enough. Now I try to check the wire with the key on and I get 2.3 volts. I thought is was supposed to be 5v? I got the same reading from the D22pin at the PCM. Any clues??? Im trying to figure out why I have so much knock retard.

Re: help with knock sensor troubleshooting!!!

If someone set up an OBD-I PCM to work with your 96 OBD-II knock sensor, they probably made an internal change to the PCM so the two would work together. Whether that modification corresponds to the 2.3V you are seeing should be asked to whoever altered your PCM.

I'm assuming that you are measuring the reference voltage with the harness connector removed from the sensor, and I'm assuming the reason you are still using the 100Kohm sensor with your OBD-I conversion is because the PCM was converted to allow this.

That is correct. It was a madZ conversion so I suspect it was done right. Reason for testing everything is that Im getting like 10deg of knock even with a stock tune and 93 octane. i have no lights and performance is decent, just have knock retard between 3900-4500rpm.

you got roller rockers and are they adjusted properly, not ticking. other causes.......maybe exhaust leak from header/manifold/egr? Knock sensor will pick up such things.

Put it on a switch with the resistor on one side of the switch and the other side stock.
If you are sure it's false knock just do the resistor mod and don't waste your money on a LT4 KM it won't work.

Re: help with knock sensor troubleshooting!!!

longblock is bone stock 52k, so no roller rockers here. I had some time today and took my ORY off and beat the hell out of the drivers side floor for some added clearance (it was TIGHT before). A new log shows that it helped tremendously. I went from getting 30,000 knock counts on 1 WOT run to 2,000. Can someone glance at my log and see it anything looks crazy out of place. I put the stock tune back on it for the logs, just to make sure it wasnt me playing with anything.
I have read alot about the resistor mod, but only want to do it as a last resort. Cant the knock be desenstized in the tunercat tables? BTW, i already have the LT4KM I did do back to back logs with each one and I can definitly see how the LT4KM smoothed out and reduced the spark retard due to knock, but did not eliminate it. I am lucky to have a staight 1 mile highway right outside my subdivision for logs
If I do go ahead and do the mod, my would need some resistor values since I have a OBD1 PCM and OBD2 KS. Thanks guys

A board search will give ya all the info on the resistor.

Re: help with knock sensor troubleshooting!!!

Ive read alot about the resistors and even got the knockit program and schematic, which shows you which reisistor value to get in relation to what desensatizing you want. Am I wrong to think that the values would be different between OBD1 and 2? I just thought since my PCM has been modded that the values would be different.
