No check engine light? Have you checked the plugs and fuel filter?

Is it an A4? Could the torque converter not be unlocking?

guess the car was running for about 30 minutes or so when it did it then ran fine for along while when it did it again.

Having similar problems, stock 95Z A4 of my stepsons.. Won't idle, won't move with out poping etc. Not safe to drive. No oil or water leaks onto opti. Everything looks perfect. Just came out of the blue with no codes.

mine was doing the same thing right before I parked it for the winter to rebuild it. I will follow this thread to see the outcome.

we had a car do something really similar...ended up being the fuel pump...the car would prime the pump, start and die, had to put a gauge on the fuel rail and have someone watch that it didn't make enough pressure to keep the motor going.

It could be a number of things but since you mentioned that it happens at stop lights. If that is true, perhaps the lock up on the torque converter is not releasing. Fluid change may help if it is sticking. More severe mechanical issues with the lock up on the torque converter could be a bit more costly.
