help! cant not set valve lash

ive tried a couple of methods but the rockers always hit the valve

cover, ive got a decked block and im running lunati 1.5 roller

rockers, this should not hit the valve cover right? also im not

positive that im that i can find TDC of #1, I put my finger in the

spark plug hole of #1 and felt the air come out, as i felt it stop

pushing air i guessed it was at TDC, was this correct?

thanks vince

Rockers hitting the valve cover does not sound like an adjustment problem, it sounds like an interference problem with the particular rockers you have. Some people have needed to clearance the inside of the valve cover depending on rocker style. This is what you may need to do.

As 94ltwonz28 said, you can use the pointer on the pulley to tell you where you are, if you know the pulley and hub were indexed correctly. With the pointer at 12 o'clock, you will be at either #1 or #6 TDC and you can use the valves to help you determine that.

I try the air coming out the #1 plug deal, and I couldn't tell if it was or not. The best way is for TDC is rotate the crank until the arrow is at 12 "o" clock postion, check #1 intake and exhaust to see if both are in the up position (closed). If one is open and the other is close then just turn the crank again (one full turn again at the 12 "o" clock). As for clearance with 1.5 RR it should fit on factory valve covers. Maybe the breather baffle is in the way. If that's were it's hitting it at.

I don't trust my valve lashing to an arrow on the hub, especially since it isn't even keyed I typically just rotate the engine and pay attention to which lifters are in motion to determine which ones are riding on the base circle.

You are sure the rockers are hitting the top of the covers? If the geometry is correct and you are indeed hitting the covers, you might want to try perimeter bolt, SBC, cork valvecover gaskets. Cut the tabs off and they will fit the centerbolt covers and may provide just a bit more height, maybe just enough.

In stock configuration, I don't think the hub is going anywhere. As always, you should be aware of what the heck you are doing and if something does not match up right when you are adjusting the valves, then you should check it out.

there is no way you should be hitting the valve covers with the 1.5 rockers. you said the block is decked? hmmm....

As far as the pistons go, yes they are identical. The pistons travel up and down in pairs. It is the cam timing that determines which cylinder is on the power stroke (considered TDC). All of this is inherent to the way a 4 stroke engine operates.

ok

so how do i tell the difference? the intake is on, so as i look at the pushrod on #1 and # 6 the look very similar,

i heard the very best method is just to watch as the intake starts to close adjust the exhaust and as the exhaust is opening adjust the intake. how can i do this by myself????

thanks vince

On one of the cylinders the exhaust lifter/pushrod should be up, causing that valve to open. The opposite cylinder would have both valves closed and be at TDC. Look on my Tech Page. There is a long description of several different ways you can set your valves.

What exactly is hitting? If you are using Non SA rockers, the body is too wide and the covers need to be modded, or you can run Vette covers, or something else. With SA rockers they should work fine, 1.5 or 1.6.
