heating issues

My 94 z28 overheated on my way to work about a week ago. I parked it in a hotel parking lot and came back later that day and changed the water pump and thermostat there in the parking lot . Now the engine will stay cool if i'm cruising on the highway but if I get stuck at a red light the temp will go up very slowly until I turn the heater on full blast ... the service engine soon light comes on but only when the fan kicks on which isn't all the time ... could the fan not coming on be my problem? I know the fuse foe the fan is a ford fuse I don't know if that really matters but it makes me nervous driving in the tx heat so if anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it
Thanks

Re: heating issues

The fans should come on anytime the temperature is above 226*F or about 3/4 on the gauge. If they aren't something is wrong with the control cirucit.

The fact that the fans come on with the SES light indicates the relays are fine. The fans come on with the SES as a safety precaustion for the engine and is normal. SCan the computer to see what the code is...report the code, not what the guy tells you is wrong...and we'll help figure that out. I'd also see if you can get a computer scan to see what temperature the computer thinks ot's running at....if the coolant temp switch is bad, the pcm won't know when to turn the fans on....
