Heads and Intake for 383

The LT1 in my 94 Z is tired so a local shop is pulling it and turning it into a 383. They are replacing the cam, but I do not know the specs. It will be mild.

The car is used on the street and for Autocross, plus will do some PDX once it gets running well. For that I need a nice idle and throttle response is more important than max HP. RPMs do not need to be beyond stock.

I am looking for recommendations on heads and intake.

If I get an aftermarket head will I still need to get it ported?
Not finding many intakes, Edelbrock or GM LT4.

Thanks!

Based on what you indicated, I would just port the stockers but try and get the cam matched to those ported heads if you can.

You are first assuming you need a different intake, then assuming the two options there are are upgrades. Wrong on all counts. Internally the LT4 intake is the same as an LT1 intake, and the Edelbrock is just a joke meant to scam money out of folks who assume they need something other than stock.

For throttle response and peak power www.advancedinduction.com is the ticket.
For the vast majority of builds ported stock heads are a better choice than aftermarket.

send your heads and intake to AI or Lloyd Elliott and get a custom made cam from them

Thanks, that's why I asked.

So general opinion is just port what I have. That will save some money. I knew the 383 would need more air.

If I found LT4 heads and intake cheap would it make sense to have them ported instead of the LT1s? The way I understand it the LT4 intake is not much different but if you change the heads you have to change the intake.

Checked the links to AI, looks like that is in my budget. Will see if anyone local does a lot of LT1 porting before I decide.

I assume when I get it all together I will need to have the computer reprogrammed.

And I need to get the intake powder-coated red. That's good for at least 25hp. I already have a number of decals on the car, they are good for a few HP right

Also dont discount Lingenfelter for the heads..They are running a special for $1395 you get your heads CNC ported new Manley severe duty 2.00/1.56 valves, titanium retainers, dual springs (forget their rating but I think its .600 lift) and meticulously assembled...They have a 2 week turnaround...I've run them for 13 years on my 383 with a small custom Joe Overton cam (226/234)...rpms never need more than 6300 and its very fun to drive...just another option...They do have a decent selection of LT cams too as well as the tried and true 211/219 and 219/219...and stay with the stock manifold...You can have it ported as I had mine, but I see no need for anything aftermarket for your application...

Best thing would be to call the shops and see what they say about heads/cam and what you need for your goals.

You DEFINITELY do not wanna over cam the engine.

Ya use the guy two posts above me. Llyod Elliot.
He has a independent shop out of texas. They will grind you a custom cam to suit your needs. I would go this way if i were you. Port the stock heads and intake, your not after something wild so dont use aftermarket castings. Not needed. Than get a 58mm tb and call it a day. (for the top end)

I can tell you that your going to be happy. Ask llyod about his customer satisfaction? my guess would be around 110%
