Heads/Cam Question
Heads/Cam Question
I am doing the heads and cam on my 94 Z28 and I was really set on the LE1 package up until I found out how long it would take to get parts back. I cant afford to have my car down that long since its my daily driver. Ive decided to just get the heads done locally and buy a cam from summitt. I plan to get all of the same parts that would be included in the LE1 package except for the machining will be done locally. My question is, if i replace the cam, do I also have to replace pushrods, lifters, or valves, or only if those parts are bad? Do I at least need to replace valve seals?
Why not buy a spare set of stock heads, and have them ported while you continue to drive the car? When you get the ported heads back, sell the stockers for what you paid for the spare set.
Your stock lifters should be fine after careful inspection of them for any damage.
Valves are fine unless you want your shop to put in bigger ones.
You'll also need new springs and make sure they will work with the cam you are going with.
PAC1218s or 1518s are the recommended beehive given your lift isn't over .605".
Valve seals should be done when the shop does your heads, that should be a given, if the shop is not doing that automatically, you might want to find another shop.
And you'll want a set of roller rockers, NSA with anything with a good lift, therefore you'll need some guideplates too...which means some hardened pushrods..chromoly ones recommended which is more $$ but gauranteed to last since its your driver... It all adds up quick...swapping a cam is no cheap mod.
I can tell you from experience that if you think you can just do a fast H/C install think again. Something unexpected always comes up that causes delays, like when you find that front cam bearing completely worn out.
