Headers installed- but won't pass inspection

I installed pacesetter headers and also replaced the catalytics to magnaflow hi flow OBD2 cats. I drove the car probably about 150miles city and highway, but when I got it inspected its throwing 3 codes- EGR system, Catalyst, oxygen sensor. I guess i'm allowed to have 2 bad codes to pass but not three. Do I need to drive the car some more for the computer to adjust to the headers?

get your PCM tuned to have the EGR system deleted

Re: Headers installed- but won't pass inspection

Are they emissions legal headers or did you just not plug in the rear O2's, and block off the EGR? If you deleted out the emissions stuff then you need to get it programmed out of the computer. If they are emissions compliant then your EGR might be from too little backpressure....I know that was my problem when I did my headers. I would think that the catalyst and O2's would go hand in hand since the only way the computer would know if there was a catalyst problem would be if there was a difference between the readings of the O2's before and after the cats. I.E. if your cats are operating correctly then you should have the same readings from your front and rear O2's....if not then you get a code. I'm not totally sure but think that is right. Worse comes to worse you can just get them deleted out of your computer and the codes won't come up anymore.

Yeah, I have all 4 o2's hooked up. I had to use extensions for the o2 sensors, but I ended up using all 4. How much to get it tuned? Or do I either need to check the o2 sensor wires or do I just need to drive the car some more?

Did you install coated headers? The coating could have damaged the O2 sensors as it burned off.

Did you fail because you have "codes" for each of those items, or because those systems were "not ready"? Two different scenarios. If its a "code" problem, have it scanned and get the exact codes, so you know EXACTLY what the problem is... e.g. which O2 sensor they are talking about, whther its the EGR valve of the EGR solenoid, etc..

What he said. I used to do emissions tests. People would have codes and reset there computers so the light would go off. but if you dont drive at LEAST 300 + miles then the computer hasnt learned those systems yet and it will come up as NOT READY. you can have 2 not readys here in GA as far as other states I have no idea. but we need to know if you failed on readyness or because you have a SES light and it is throwing those codes.

Re: Headers installed- but won't pass inspection

Here's an older thread that will show you 2 ways to get your EGR monitor ready and not throw any codes, even if you don't have enough backpressure and would normally throw the po400 code or have removed the EGR completely.
If you're getting your pcm tuned ask about having the EGR tuned out but the monitor showing ready as described in the thread.
If you use the relay trick you won't have to send it out.
My car passed here with 2 monitors not ready.
Proscan software will tell me when the monitors reset and after reflashing my pcm recently the EGR and O2 heater read ready so far at less than 100 miles. The AIR took longer, overall 2 tanks of gas to get to the 2 not ready point.

For my emission tests i had one not ready, postponed the next one, then another not ready and they passed me. This was in MD. All my emission stuff on the paper said N/A. The first time i reset the battery. The second time i deleted the code with an autozone scanner.

I found that holding a bat in your hand while the emissions guy is scanning your car works wonders for passing successfully.

Re: Headers installed- but won't pass inspection

Mine were three NOT READY signs, and I guess it was because I unplugged the battery for my stereo install 20 minutes before I went to emissions, lol. So now I have to wait 300 miles!?!?!? It was weird because I went to Auto Zone yesterday because I threw an SES light after a 250 mile trip and they said their diagnostic tools werent connecting with my pcm , it was saying "connection link failure". He tried it 3 times with the car ON and the car OFF. I was pissed because I need to figure out why the ses is on and the car is stalling when I first start it from SUPER low idle (until it is ran for about 20 seconds then its fine ).
