Question Headers back install

Hey Guys,

I am about to purchase a set of mid-length rksport headers, y-pipe, CAT, and catback from a member on the board. (Basically his system)

I am going to change my spark plugs and wires during this tear off and install.

1. What gaskets are the better ones to buy?(will work without problems)

2. What Brand of spark plugs and wire sets should I go with? Arizona 120 degrees for 3 months. I want to change these during the install so that it might be easier to do.

3.Any tips from experiences that I could avoid and maybe have this done in a day.

4. What am I forgetting that I haven't mentioned???

I guess I should say I am going to do this in my driveway. I don't know how long it will take. I'm hoping not more than a day. I have helped to install headers on a 64 1/2 Mustang and a 71 Chevelle. I'm guessing this time won't be so easy.

Thanks in advance for the help!

1. Felpro 1406 i believe

2. NGK TR55s or even ur stock autolites would work well , wires depends, u can get MSD wires or OTVC wires(Taylor is the only i know that sell OTVC wires but im sure MSD may )

3.if u had LTs id say get motor mounts no matter what but with milenghth im sure ull be good
Starter, steering knucle and alternator have to come off, also ditch the EGR and AIR if u cant its just gonna be a slightly longer hassle. u may have to modify oil dipstick. Not sure if theres anything else , its kinda straigh forward.
oh yeah LUBE EVERYTHING B4 DISSASEMBLE, best way to get teh bolts off the manifold flanges. if u break one its just another hassle.

4. ull prolly need a 12" 02 extension for the driver side, locking header bolts would be good but the ones that come with the headers should work, just have to recheck for the first few heat cycles. Not sure its been a while since i did header install

This is gonna be much more PITA than the other two cars listed. It can be done in a day it just takes patients and some hard work.

good luck

Re: Headers back install

I have to be emissions legal I don't think I can ditch AIR and EGR.

So I think I am going to have a hassle that is going to be totally worth it.

Has anyone written an install article for headers for the lt1? Just Curious.
I was just gonna go buy some bosch platinum plugs but I have also heard good things about NGK. A friend of mine works for Checker Auto Parts and can hook me up with 25% off whatever I want. Every little bit helps!

I want to do a Dyno run and see how much power I'm layin down.

ive never heard anything good about bosh platinums,

go with the NGK TR55s

there are writeups , just search, but u its pretty much straight forward

another tip , do not crank down on the header bolts , ur heads are aluminum and can strip holes

also when wrenching the header bolts work your way from the inside out

ur cars a 95 ur emissions equipments not needed and ur car is not affected by the new emission rules....

well techncally u need the emisions stuff but ur prolly only gonna go through a visual right? most techs wont care or wont even know. just make buddies with a tech

Re: Headers back install

Fel-Pro 1406 gaskets and NGK TR-55 plugs have served me well. It is possible to have your header install done in a day, but that is kind of rushing things. I would slow down and take your time.

Re: Headers back install

Actually, I have visual inspection and then they put the tail pipe tubes on and check the exhaust gases for hydrocarbons and whatever other gases. The techs are ***holes here When I bought the car to be emissioned they kicked me out because I overfilled my coolant overflow tank and got a little water under the hood. It isn't even 120 yet!

I'll go with the NGK plugs I have heard good things about them.

I have seen some people have a few problems with the Felpro 1406 gaskets.

Where do I buy Percy Aluminum gaskets? (If I should go with those)

MSD or Taylor wires???

Thanks for all the help!!!

Re: Headers back install

Jegs or Summit should have the Percys gaskets. If you don't mind spending a little more for wires, then the MSDs would probably be your best choice over the Taylors.

well if they are that much of di(ks id keep my emisions equipment

MSD wires id go with, i went with taylors only b/c they were the only ones i knew at the time that did the otvc kits

i went with copper gaskets b/c a friend who is a professional motor builder recoomended them, havent had a prblem with them yet, many ppl do not like them, i guess it also depends on headers. some headers the flanges maynot be completley flat and the gasket doesnt conform to it.
