I have the same problem. Actually, after rebuilding the engine and throwing in a pair of poly motor mounts, the column was rubbing on my header during turns. Not sure what I am going to do.

I have the rag joint eliminator from Unbalanced Engineering ($35) which is a nice piece. So I don't want an LS1 steering column.

Oh, I had the rag joint eliminator for over a year. It fixed most of the play issue. I highly recommend it, especially for cars with headers that melt the stock rubber and fiberglass rag joint. The rest of it was fixed by ordering a good set of Moog inner and outer tie rods.

I also have rk sports headers . I had to put a small roll in mine to help with clearance. rk quality is not consistent. My son also as rk, his is almost a half a inch difference in location. main I problem is the tube is to close to the heat shielding.

Here is the picture of my modded steering shaft. I legthened it 3/4" and welded it up and shifted the steering column.
The header primary no longer comes close to banging it.

You can tell from the photos that the steering shaft is straighter wich is always better for the u-joints anyway.

I ended up removing that sheet metal shield and bent the rear brake line down and well out of the way of the header.
The RK sport headers definitely have fitment issues that require creativity and patience.
Mine now fit flawlessly and were worth $490.00 shipped and nearly 24 hours of install time.

it's a simple fix. just cut the steering shaft out with a torch! who needs that thing anyways?

someone already mentioned the shaft is adjustable. I think you have to remove the plastic dust shield in order to get to the steering knuckle bolts. Also, motor mounts may help too but I got away with adjusting the shaft and leaving my original motor mounts in.

does anybody know if the the ls1 sterring shaft will work with all header or is it only for rk sports? i have pacesetter mid length and they are rubbung a liittle bit.

Yes the LS1 shaft will work, but thteering wheel will be very off center and require an alignment if you want it to be straight.
