NEVER lift the motor by the oil pan!! You'll punch the jack right through it. Use a 2x6 and slide it up on edge behind the crank pulley and jack it up there. I know its kinda scarry jacking on the crank but after you do it once you'll see its not that bad. You can get probably 4 inches out of it at least.

Just use the bellhousing to jack the motor up, no need to use the crank or oil pan and possibly damage something.
Ive had my car 30 inches in the air on homemade jackstands and felt safe about it, yet i would not get under transamdriver's car. That looks plain stupid, no where near safe, especially if that middle block falls and knocks you the **** out.

I don't know guys my jackstands on top of ramps looked a heck of a lot safer than anything else I've seen.......no pics though.
we gotta find that picture of the car like 4 feet in the air with 25 blocks of wood under it on the jack....Marcin maybe?

Come on, for years I have used a small piece of 2x6 on the jack's pad to jack up an engine a few inches by way of the oilpan (crank hub if I'm removing the oil pan)
Oil pans are not made out of aluminum foil. They are actually quite sturdy for short term lifting. I ofcourse would never lift the CAR by the oil pan, but jacking the engine by way of the oil pan is not by any means going to "punch a hole" in it or crush it.
Oh and out of curiosity, how do you lift your tranny?
