Header Gasket???
Header Gasket???
I'm wondering what header gasket I need for my headers? I have what are supposedly SLP Long-tube headers...but they are made very similar to Hooker's. I already tried to use the factory exhaust gaskets, and they just don't cover the ports...any ideas? I've heard Fel-Pro 1406...do they fit well?

Re: Header Gasket???
Yea the 1406's are usually a good fit.....unless your heads have had the exhaust ports raised at all....like mine were.....so I had to dremel them out a bit on the top of the gaskets ports......once you get the header gasket matching the heads exactly, then bolt them (the header gaskets) against your headers, and port the header flange to match the head port "exactly"......this is always worth checking with any head, header, and header gasket combo......(even on stock head exhaust ports, as far as the way they match the header ports).........
Re: Header Gasket???
The brand and composition of the gasket doesn't matter.
The installation procedure does.
You CANNOT just install it and forget it.
I bought the headers that are on my car I think... three years ago...?
It was the kind that looks like compressed cardboard. I installed it, fired the engine and shut it off 5 minutes later. I retightened the bolts and ran the car for 10 minutes and shut it off again, retighteneing the bolts again.
I then carried a small box wrench with me for a few days and every time I wanted to start the car I would tighten the bolts first.
I think I did this three times before I stopped finding loose bolts. When I failed to find loose bolts three times in a row, I was done.
Gaskets haven't leaked yet.
