Head work being done, What springs do I use ?
I am having the heads ported, the cam shaft for now is stock next month it will be the 847. Can I go ahead and install springs that would be used for that cam and not worry about them while its still on the stock cam ?
you have to decide on a cam first... then decide on what springs fit your cam's valve lift... like if you were gonna get a comp cams 306 cam for example, the you would wanna get some comp cams 986 springs which support that cams maximun valve lift... also if you get 1.6 rr's those will increase your valve lift as well...
when picking out a cam it will tell you what the cam's lift is, and then you just multiply that number to get the cams lift with 1.6 rr's... cause usually they are listed with 1.5 rr specs... UNLESS otherwise NOTED

In addition to the lift considerations, you need to also make sure your spring pressures match the cam. That cam has a fairly high power peak, so you will need springs that allow you to rev without float or risk of damage. Since you are having the heads ported, you should get the spring seats machined to fit the correct springs for that cam when they do the other machine work.
I wrote some Tech Tips on this subject. Go to www.kennedysdynotune.com and click on "Tech Tips" button at the bottom of the left hand menu. On the "Tech Tips" page, click on the link to ""Valve Spring Tech".
