having 383 built.... general questions

i'm just wondering if this sounds like a good deal and what questions i should ask this guy before i have it done. is there anything you would do differently

Speed Pro hypereutectic skirt coated 11:1 pistons

Hastings Moly rings

Pioneer brass freeze plugs

Eagle forged I-Beam connecting rods:

Clevite 77 rod and main bearings

Fel-Pro Gasket set

Melling High Volume oil pump

Melling pick up screen

Melling Oil pump driveshaft

Cloyes timing set

Balanced Scat 3.75 stroke crankshaft

Fel-Pro Head Bolts

ISKY valve springs

High Performance roller lifters

CAT Aluminum Roller rocker arms

Camshaft #3

Specs are 234/246 @.050 530/550 with 1.5 rockers and 565/585 with 1.6 rockers and 112 LSA.... You will have to adjust your computer. These cams pull extremely well through ALL rpm ranges... headers, 2500-3000 torque converter and gears are an extreme plus and will make this cam the best choice for a street/strip LT engine ... This cam is very streetable with a lope that will turn every head at the stop light.

Block Preparations:

Cleaned, Clearanced for the longer stroke, Bored/Honed +.030, Line Honed, cam bearings/freeze plugs installed, Deck surface inspected(It will be 100 extra if the block needs to be resurfaced). Painted any color you want.

Heads and intake preparations:

Everything goes though intensive cleaning - look at pics

Heads:

3 angle valve job, valve guides checked, Swirl Polished Stainless steel valves, .600 lift ISKY valve springs, Mild porting, Deck surface checked - (100 extra for resurfacing.), reassembled

I am having the pistons upgraded, and more porting and 2.02/1.5x valves put in. the tranny is being rebuilt with a shift kit and stall included included. he's pulling and re-installing the motor. Tell me if this seems like a good deal... here's the pricing. If you know anyone who will do it cheaper let me know

$3600 engine -base price
400 remove/install
170 stall tc
50 oil/coolant etc.
100 - pcm reprogram
250 - pistons - upgradefrom base price
400 - head porting /valves - upgrade from base price
150- starter
100 - tranny shift kit w/ install
total = $5220- so far

Re: having 383 built.... general questions

Couple of comments, not a complete analysis.

1. Ditch the HV oil pump for a standard volume pump.
2. You will need a tranny cooler if you are running a high stall converter.
3. I am niot familiar with the CAT rockers.
4. You are going to need pushrods.
5. If the rotating assy. is being neutral balanced you will need a zero balance flexplate.
6. That is a damn cheap converter at $170 and I am therefore quite suspicious of it. What brand is it? A decent converter is going to be at least twice that much and a good one even more.

Re: having 383 built.... general questions

The torque converter comes from oregon performance transmission. He said I will need a different starter because he uses a 168 tooth flexplate instead of the stock 153. he usually uses cvr starters. Woud this 168 tooth be the zero balance flexplate? My dad keeps saying I should have it "blueprinted" because our race car motor has been together for 7 years, and thats what he did. Whats up with the blue printing?

Re: having 383 built.... general questions

Blueprinting refers to the practice of trying to build the engine as exactly to spec as possible. It also implies balancing, which is where you make sure that all of your moving parts are 'balanced'. That means, for instance; that all your pistons and rods weigh exactly the same, to the extent that that's possible.
