Still hard start? (MANY new parts)
Still hard start? (MANY new parts)
Ok my car was missing at wot at about 5k well i changed everything but it didnt work. So i bucked up and bought a opti. The car runs great no misses pulls hard and smooth BUT it has hard start ups. I THINK it is one of two things let me know if they are related or not. 1. The crank position sensor is bad. Would that cause hard starts? 2. I JUST put the opti on this weekend but the first gm opti i put on which was brand new didnt work so i cranked on my car ALOT tring to get it to start. Could i have fouled my plugs tring to start it with my first bad opti? The car has new fuel pump, fuel filter, msd coil, taylor wires, ngk plugs, and new opti. I just really want to know if a bad crank position sensor will cause hard starting? THANKS!!!!!
Re: Still hard start? (MANY new parts)
Everyone on this board knows you shouldn't have to do that. It's a troubleshooting technique. Usually it is a fuel related problem if your problem is long cranking. Either the fuel is draining back toward the tank while the engine is off. Or it's dripping into the intake. Since you have already replaced the fuel pump, I suggested you start by looking for a flooding condition. When you hold the pedal to the floor when cranking the engine, it will cut back the amount of fuel that is injected. If it starts quicker then, it's time to look at the vac line on the regulator or the injectors. Be sure to check the oil for fuel contamination if that is the case also.
On the flip side, the other thing to try the next time you start it is to cycle power on engine off. Then turn the key off and cycle power this way 5 or 6 times. Then try to start it like normal with out touching the throttle. If it starts easier now, the problem was due to fuel draining back away from the fuel rails. The way to isolate that is crimp the fuel lines off at the engine.
