Has anyones valve seats ever broke out?

My valve seat fell out of my head the other night and caused abunch of damage on my new rebuilt engine... is there any reason this happened ? The car did not over heat. there was no knock befor this happened . was this just a case of bad luck or what?????

OMG-

Were the heads worked on at all? were they a complete assembly with the shortblock?

The valve seats REQIRE a certain amont of press. especially into a head like the LT1. If it does not have enough press, the seat will literally fall out of the head due to the different expansion rates of aluminum and steel. If it wasnt overheated (which wouldnt really matter in this case, the seat should have enough press to withstand extremely high tems without falling out) I would have a SERIOUS talk with the engine builder.

This is not your fault. I would be pissed. It is bad luck, but it is due to someone else's mistake.

Very strange.

The heads have never had major work? No valve seat replacement? No welding?

Maybe too little press fit tolerance but that's unlikely....... who knows.

Our Datsun 510 had a valve seat that poped out, after 275k miles.

With aluminum heads, the valve seats are hardened steel rings that are pressed into the head. Depending on the manufacturing tolerances, age, wear, heat etc. they can work loose, although its rare.

Curios, was it the intake or exhaust seat?
