has anyone gained power going form FLP Ypipe to true duals?
has anyone gained power going form FLP Ypipe to true duals?
just wondering if there is any hp to be found if i ditch my FLP Y pipe and go with a dual 3" exh setup !? reason i ask is the FLP has that small 2.5" section in the y pipe that i think might be choking my exh
car makes 380 rwhp NA and made 470 with 100 shot.. i was really hoping to hit 400 NA .. looking for 20 more hp

I know what you mean. I had this y-pipe made for my FLPs so I could bet my driveshaft looop to fit. I got rid of that restriction, but I don't think I gained much power.
My car stock with the stock single exhaust, pulled roughly 101 mph traps.
I put on a magnaflow 3" cat back and had a cut out also welded in . I gained roughly 2.5 or 3 mph in traps , I can't remember for sure.
When I had single exhaust with very few bolt on's it pulled 276 rwhp with cutout closed, 280 rwhp with cutout open.
I put on 1 3/4 long tube dynatech headers, and 3" custom true duals with a 3" h pipe custom made etc... I hit best of 4.4 mph gain in the traps.
But on a standard warm day, about 90* on portable dyno, I pulled 296 rwhp with the duals.
I only made 16 more hp at the wheels on the duals that day, It is more powerfull on cooler night just like everyone elses car, but what I'm saying is.. It flowed that much BETTER on the duals, then the single exhaust, unless you have some massive 4" single like the mufflex, I would do the duals man, you can't beat the exhaust tone, and the gains. But my single exhaust FLOWED very well for single.
I am assuming while you say you have a FLP y pipe that you have FLP long tube headers? DO THE DUALs, and forget the single , in my opinion. If you have questions email me. I have a sound file of the car with duals from a 1st gear roll, you can hear the rpm's just jump with street tires.
IMOP-With your modifications already done on the car, I think you would gain close to your hopes of 400 rwhp. I would love to hit 400 RWHP on the plans of my car on N/A.

Ok then by what you are saying that my experiences with my car are false then? Then the dyno's must lie.
If you are wondering about torque, I dyno'd the same amount of torque max, but it made my torque band much smoother in the low rpm band especially, but all around it was more leveled out.
From what I have seen on my car with a STOCK LT1, I have no doubt in my mind , Depending on what style Single exhaust is on the car now, that he will increase his power by converting to true duals. It can't hurt to try, worst scenario, you have a nice flowing exhaust that sounds better then the single exhaust.
What are you running modifcations wise? Cam, and heads? Which ones. Just wondering.

well no doubt in my mind that i'll be going to a dual 3" setup with an H pipe and dual 3" cutouts and quiet mufflers
i just wanted to see if anyones actually gained any real power (anyone with mods sort of like mine)
my heads flow 302/214 @ .600 (stage III LT4s) and i run a CC306 cam .. stock motor, and some nitrous
though a dual power adder 396 is in the planning stages

My previous post was intended for the guy who said you won't gain any HP, Just about anything you do gains power, It all adds up, 5 here, 2 here, by the time you know it, You have the 20 your looking for.
Well you would definintely pick up some with the cutouts open, just look into your muffler selection wisely, don't rush into anything.
Well I'm just saying, I picked up 16 rwhp with the duals, more then likely a chunk of that was from the headers, but The pipes do matter just as much as the source, How would it breathe if it's choked after the main exhaust source.. Definintely not as well as it could with something that is designed to flow.
It might be loud but the idea of dual cut outs is a good idea, just find good area for ground clearance and so you have enough backpressure. Hope it works well for you.
Did i read that right? your exhaust flowing 214 @ .600 ?
Did you ever dyno the car before and after the heads? Or did you do the cam and everything together which I'm sure you did. Just doing head comparisions now.

sorry .. my bad on the exh flow #s
214 is at .500
heres the rest of my head flow sheet for ur amusement

100 74 51

the car dynoed 334 with a cc305 and stock heads and macs .. i know its lacking power right now with my ew combo .. but then again i do have hte heaviest drivetrain u can trow together and this is with a bone stock tune (which came pretty clsoe to perfect other than 10deg KR from 4000+) .. laptop was dead so i couldnt do any tuning .. my drivetrain also makes the car a dyno PIG (street twin, super heavy 3.5" steel shaft, 12 bolt with 4.10s, 11" ZR1s with heavey *** 315 street rubber and crappy catback)
on the other hand the car ran 12.0 @ 117 with 1.80 60' at 3600# race weight .. so at least the track mph adds up more or less

Yeah I read that spec and had to look twice , I figured it was at .500 I'm suprised there is that much of a difference from .500-.600 The TEA heads I looked at only increased slightly.
What did your heads run you? DO you have AIM ? If you do IM me @ my93z286spd
That is still quite impressive 334 with those mods, Nice job. I'm sure you will get it tweaked out, I have no doubt you can pick up 20 rwhp on a IDEAL tune for the car, and get that knock leveled out, and run the duals.
My dual 3" was told me that it would be equal to or not flow that much more then a single 3.5" , but hey everything adds up, I'm happy with what I have and will only go higher from here.
The 9" rear ends I have been told are about 50# heavier then the 12 bolts you can pick up for the f-bodys. And yes those are heavy!

93_Z28_6spd - Im sure you know Al ( LQ4 Super sport), he picked up 40 rwhp with a mandrel bend true dual set up...
A guy here Kevin did his original X pipe and it was pretty restrictive at the X intersection. There are some pics of it up on Badrap.net. He went to some guys in brandon that did a real good job and he got his car up to 700wrhp from 660wrhp.
So with a good X pipe at around 380wrhp I think 20wrhp is pushing it.... But it depends on how good the FLP ypipe is... I have not seen one before. And the more power a car has the more it has to benefit from true duals.
20wrhp with a good Xpipe and a dyno tune or a good street tune could be possible if he's making 380 right now, in my opinion.
Paul could you also send me a sound clip of your exhaust. I want to go true duals, but i dont want them to be way to loud either. Not like my exhaust isnt loud anyways
... but still.
sideways_Into_3rd what kind of heads are you running? and how much did u pay for them if u dont mind me asking. I put down 318wrhp and 327 torque (mail order tune) with my cc305, 1.6 rr, borla, and every single other bolt on. Long tubes and ypipe probably has my car at around what yours had with macs since i gained 3mph in the quarter with the LT's and ypipe. Im about to change out my heads so I wanna see what works good with the CC305.

If Al drives a f-body I may not remember him, but If i saw him/his car I may know who you are talking about.
But I know a Al with a mustang that was running a pretty peppy motor, with stock duals on his car to keep the tone down some... If he ran something better on it, I know it would wake up.
I personally like the H-Pipe setup, It sounds real good and really didn't restrict the flow on my current setup. But I have never ran a X-Pipe so I'm not sure how that would have turned out on my car either.
My exhaust I custom made to FLOW , It is moderate just driving normal, but you get on it, just forget about tip toeing around, it is LOUD. I didn't like it for a while , thought it was too much, got used to it, and now I am glad I didn't tone it down any, because i originally made it to make it mean.
Depending on SWINTO3rd's current exhaust setup, a single 3" cat back, not sure what he has... that is why I was pretty sure with a good flowing exhaust, and a tune made for his car maybe on the dyno, would get him close to his goal of 400 rwhp. 20rwhp is a lot of power, but you never know until you try it out.
My car made decent more on the true duals on a stock LT1, that is why with his head/cam combo up top end it will do well for him.
ZDriver-He has Stage 3 LT4 heads, I don't remember the flow numbers he sent me but they were nice, and he has a cc306 camshaft.
Plenty of fuel, just needs someone to tweak everything to his likings and I think he can squeeze just enough out of it.
If you want duals, you will have to find something small enough to fit where the stock muffler is in pairs, or something to put under the rear seats like mine. Keeping the dual 3" pipes quiet is tough due to ground clearance, if you can raise the car up with suspension like coil overs, then you have no problem, which I plan on doing with the QA1's in the future.
Long story short do your math and research before jumping into it, I jumped into the mess and like what I have now, but it was too much when I first had everything worked out.
