It only the rust that's holding it on there.

Might want to mention the year of your car... there are two different pulley spoke designs.

Re: Harmonic Balancer

I have a 1995 Z28. If it is rust what would be the best method in removing the pulley.

Question Hijacking

Since this is an old post & I've been searching with no luck:

I am digging into a no start problem on my 95' T/A. I pulled the harmonic damper off in prepration of getting to the optispark and/or timing chain. I'm new to LT1s but I seperated the damper from the hub. if the hub is bolted to the crank & has 3 lobes that the damper is bolted to.

however the pully itself seems to move. Referencing the picture posted by injuneer the part that the serpentine belt is touching spins freely around the part the puller is hooked up to. it does have some drag but seems to spin smoothly.

is this normal? Is it like the old clutch fans used back in the 70s or should the entire damper be one piece like in the good old days?

There is a thin strip of rubber between the two parts. If that rubber gets dried out/ old the parts start to move like you are describing. It is time to replace the damper.
