Halfway through w/ cam install... how do you degree it?

we are down to the cam now. I am stopping for the night to ship my lt4 timing chain and spark plug wires and to find a torx nut to get off the cam bracket holding it in. My question is, I have heard people talking about degreeing a cam, what does this mean? In the instructions I am using they dont really say anything on it, but when I asked to get it installed, it was gonna cost me an extra 50$ to get it degreed. I know it has to do w/ changing the timing slightly, but if the stock cam was lined up w/ the dots on the sprockets of the timing chain, how can you change the timing and why would you? If I see no use in it this car can be running thursday... or even tomorrow... but first day of class is tomorrow too

sorry for this ignorant question, it has been a long day of pulling things off the motor... thanks for any help.

I just installed my cam today. I didnt degree it, i installed it dot to dot, with the cam gear at 6, crank at 12, and cam dowel at 3. I used plenty of camlube on it as well.

the only reason to degree a LT1 cam is to double check that it is ground correctly.

it has to be installed dot to dot method, to ensure proper ignition timing.

i didnt double check mine, just installed it dot to dot.

which install guide are you using?

(we are on step 43, waiting for torx bits)
that is the cam install page I am using. Yep, the top pulley at 6pm, and the bottom one at 12. I dont see the big deal about it, so I guess I will just go ahead and start puttin it back together.

Did you have any troubles getting the stock cam out? Just turn it in a circle and wiggle it out very slowly? thanks for the advice guys... any more is welcome.

The hardest part for me was wiggling it out that first bit, I used three bolts in front of it, and it wasnt too bad. Its a little harder than i thought to bring it out totally straight without banging on any cam bearings, but its not too bad. I also had to remove my hood latch for good clearance. Good Luck!
