gutting the cat converter. ANY1 done this?

My cat is going out AGAIN after only 1 year and was wondering if it is safe to just unbolt the CAT, gut it, and slap it back on. And if there is no harm in doing this (not worried about emissions) then how exactly do I gut the cat?

*do I just take a tool and rip out all the insides or what???

Stick a big screw driver inside of it and hammer away.

Or you can just get rid of it all together.

I had mine gutted when I still had the stock motor/exhaust manifold combo. It made a HUGE difference in performance!

I went 12.82 back then with only that, Flowmaster "cat-back", 4.10's, 3200 stall, CAI, Hypertech chip, and ET Streets.

Frank

PS I like my MAC off-road pipe alot better, though

If you not worried about emmisions just have your local muffler shop weld up a a pipe to connect your y pipe and cat back, it only cost $30, I got a high flow tho cuz I don't like the smell with a convertible

I gutted one once on my Iroc. I also used a long screwdriver and hammer. Put the crap in a bag and tossed it in the trash. Like already metioned, probably don't want to breathe it. But a straight pipe is a better route to go.

Yeah i just beat the crap out of the inside of mine with a hammer and screw driver. I wish now i would have just bought an off road pipe then put the cat back on for inspection. (The gutted cat makes a tin can sound that drives me nuts!!)

As energetic as your replies have been, no one's mentioned D/FW emissions tests. If you don't have the coin to put it all back (the cat, egr, etc..) if you fail emissions, I'd say their 'You go, Dude!" replies will only cost you $$, despite any gains.

Post in the Texas forum for localized options...

I did it and I love it. Noticed a big gain when it was done. I also removed the heat shield since it will no longer get 3 million degrees there. It gets rid of a lot of little noises. Air cutting tool had it off in 5 minutes. Also, I would suggest taking off the y-pipe putting in a table clamp and using a crow-bar and mallet. Its much easier because it is actually long enough to get all the way in. Make sure you get it all out. AND WHERE A MASK! That stuff does cause cancer.
