I was driving the car down the highway 3 weeks after a fresh opti spark. The car dies in 6th gear while cruising. I get the opti warrentied out and replace it myself. Upon completeion of installation of new opti, the car started right up. Ran fine for a couple hours. Then died again. I took it to the dealership. They said the car was out of time and the opti was installed wrong. They took it apart and said it was and reassembled it. Again, the car started, ran fine, then just started backfire at idle and acting like it was on 6 cylanders. No power. Then it just died like someone turned the key off. Sometimes it runs fine for 5 minutes then dies. Other times it goes for a few hours, then dies. If it sits for a few hours it will start back up. The dealer ship is clueless and blames it on the new motor. The motor is about 1.5 years old and is nothing special. Ported heads with a cc305 and forged pistons/rods. Nothing wild.

Any ideas? I need to get this thing working corectly again.

What about dowel pin length? Did it ever run for a long time after the CC cam was installed?

The car ran flawlessly for about 1.5 years after new motor (~12,000 miles). Then 3 weeks after new opti. Now not so much

 

I think fuel pump. Sometimes when they go, it can be erradic. Happened to me. Finally it went for good. Get you a fuel pressure gage with a hose and put it where you can see it when your seated in the car. May also be loosing spark.

 

Ok, yeah I saw that but was not sure the cam was installed at the same time.

You need to find out if you are loosing spark, fuel pressure, whatever, when this occurs. That will help you on your way to solving it. Just as another idea, could be the ICM is acting up when gettting hot.

 

Could be acting up. I took the ICM, coil, and even PCM off and put it on my buddies 94. His started right up. Only ran it for a couple minutes though.

Next time it does it I'll pull a wire and check for spark.

Any other suggestions?

 

Based on the year my vote is fuel pump. I have seen ignition modules do this as well.
