Guideplate problem....

All of my pushrod guideplates ahave a groove wore in them from the pushrods. It is pretty bad with only 600 miles on them. They are GM guideplates. I was getting some valve float around 6300rpms. Could the valve float cause the pushrods to wear through the plates like that?

Oh and i have comp chromemoly pushrods.

Like Shoe asked are your rockers self aligning or not.
Ya can't run guideplates with self aligning rockers.

Re: Guideplate problem....

Stock heads, everything looked straight... Stock length pushrods. Comp R lifters. I have to pull the heads due to spinning a bearing and having to rebuild so i will look to see if everything is ok. I am thinking maybe the metal from the plates got in my bearing causing the failure...

That would be a good bet.Or it may have messed up the oil pump, which caused it.

Re: Guideplate problem....

Just throw in my .02, the CM guideplates have been on my car for almost 2 years without issue, so unless you have a bad set, they likely arent an issue themselves.

Re: Guideplate problem....

Is it possible the guideplates aren't hardened?

Also, you usually can "adjust" the guideplate position so the push rods are centered in the guideplate slot.
In your case, I would center the rocker arm tip on the valve stem and adjust the guideplate so the push rod is centered in the guideplate slot.

I know this is not recommended; but, I ran Crower stainless steel self-aligning rockers on my AFR heads with AFR guideplates for 30K miles with no problems at all. However, I did carefully adjust each guideplate to make sure the push rods didn't contact them throughout their entire movement.
If you visit this page:
http://www.crower.com/cat/domestic/c...lvetrain.shtml
and look at the "features include" section it says:
"Self-aligning roller tip. Runs with or without guide plates."
I am not recommending anyone do it, but I did and got away with it.
