grinding off the newer optispark snout for older cam fitment
Re: grinding off the newer optispark snout for older cam fitment
About a week ago, someone posted how they pulled a failed Opti off their engine (recently purchased car), and it appeared that someone had done almost what you are asking.... cutting the stub off that would stick into the cam. Might want to "search" for that post and contact the originator.
Re: grinding off the newer optispark snout for older cam fitment
I will definitly do that, but, I bet you they cut it completly off and did not try to get any of it inside the cam sprocket or cam, not to mention keeping the rubber o-rings on, but, alas, Iam off to search, thanks for the heads up, I will post what I find back here.

It seems like you could take the opti to a machine shop and get the snout turned down so it would fit in the diff cam. that way you still have something going in the cam and stabilizing it.
Re: grinding off the newer optispark snout for older cam fitment
Th hole in the vented Opti cam is a pilot hole - stabilizes the end of the Opti shaft. I suspect (but am not sure) the fit through the hole in the cam sprocket is "loose". Relying on an o-ring to stabilize it would seem questionable. The unvented shaft is solidly supported by the splines in the cam sprocket.

anaik, what words did you use for a search?? I used "optispark" and missed it somehow??? Thank you.
Z95m6, yes, I am thinking the same thing, but, I need some mock up peices to take measurements and see how much suport there is, do some measurements and what not so I can give them to the machinist. I would like to take one of my old vented optis and do it first, of course.
Injun, thats true, hear ya loud and clear, but, think about it (not that YOU have to) the snout fits into the cam and would be fine, but, if you add a little cheap rubber 0-ring, it just adds to the dampning of the vibrations and chattering as opposed to metal to metal contact without them. No telling, on my end, what sice hole the cam sprocket has, reason #2 to get one in my hot little hands.
