Got around to pulling my AIR system, pics inside

Finally got around to pulling the AIR system off the TA. What a bunch of junk. Almost all the hoses were dry and brittle. Pulling off the metal tub was by far the hardest part.

Special thanks for the write-up on www.zmydust.com

Pile of junk I pulled off:

Passenger side:

Updated Engine Bay Pic (getting that out there really opens up some room under the hood. I know I have to clean too):

Engine looks great. Are you getting any codes? Do you have emissions in your state? just wonderign what the benefits are.

Re: Got around to pulling my AIR system, pics inside

Got the AIR system deleted last time I was at FLP. Yes we have emissions but my TA has never seen an emission test. I have it emission exempt.

Only benefit is a cleaner engine bay and maybe a couple pounds off the front end. The pump only runs for a couple of minutes on start up to Light off the cat (which its missing as well). Most of the hoses where dry and cracking. Mine only has about 20K on it, most of you have alot more so I doubt the system is doing anything for you, hehe.

How did you seal of the hole in the header? I looked at Home Depot for a bolt but couldn't find the right diameter. Where did you get the bolt? Did it just screw in or did you use a filler or something?

Thanks.

You need a "show car" insurance policy to qualify in IL. for an exemption.

I did a search on this MB for AS&M headers and just did alot of looking. I cant remember the site, but its a oil plug...but I couldnt tell you what size, but its HUGE. I just screwed it in and used a copper washer on it.

Most single cat headers (including the AS&M's) can be sealed with M22-1.5 oil drain plugs. Throw in a thin copper gasket to insure a good seal. The threads are actually 7/8", but the metric drain plug seems to work fine. They are available for as little as $2 if you find the right source. This source sells them (#1016) for $2, but shipping is added.

Thanks for the info...I looked at a bunch of auto parts stores and hardware stores. Such a simple idea was hard to implement.

I'll just have to go ahead and order two of those!

A.i.R. will only throw a code if you remove the relay.

You can buy them at a Dodge dealer, but you won't save any money. They are used as the oil drain plugs on the late model Cummins diesels that are used in the Dodge P/U's.

if you think those bolts are expensive, I work on helicopters for the Army and we use bolts that cost over $100 a piece on Blackhawks and we have to discard them once they go on and get removed. the repair calls for 8 of the damn things too.
