Don't think I installed the opti, but it did run fine before.

its definitly not the lifters or valve adjustment. It's is ignition related if its poping like you said.
I would lookin into your ignition. Or he might have a blow headgasket. My buddy with a 383 with a Vortec did that, it would pop like a popcorn machine.
