GM piston rings

I'm replacing the rings, engine is being re-honed. GM parts direct wants $35.00 for a "piston ring kit" for the LT1. It also says "quantity 1". So am I getting the rings for one piston or for all 8?

part # 12528817 over at GMpartsdirect.com

any other companies make rings that will work for the stock pistons, if it is infact $35.00 per piston?

2nd, will re-honing the cylinders cause any need to go with a larger piston ring, or will stockers work fine?

Thanks, Matt

anyone know the stock ring sizes for the lt1 so I can browse the aftermarket for some. Did some searches and it sounds like I can get some aftermarket ones from speed pro.

Yeah - Stock CYLINDER size is 4.00. Now, if someone throws a hone down the holes, then who knows! It's gonna end up at somewhere between 4.00 and I'd say 4.005 to 4.008.

Lets assume for a moment that you buy a stock ring set for a 4.00 bore. If it's a drop in replacement, then it's probably going to be gapped for about .015 to .018. Now, add in the amount you have it overbored, and the rings are going to open up about .001 for every .003 of bore increase give or take...

Now your looking at a ring gap of anywhere from .018 to .021. All this assumes that the bores are all the same size from the start. They might be, but then again they might NOT be.

The drop in replacement rings will indeed work, but it's ALWAYS best to use a good set of file fit rings and set the end gap to match each bore. Also, make sure that the hone being placed on the bore is consistent with the finish required for the rings being used. Stock rings are cast iron and need only the finish left by the honing stones. Most aftermarket high performance rings are moly faced, and need to have the bores brush finished to seat properly (someone please step in here and correct me if I'm wrong ).

If you ever plan on putting any spray through this motor, I would suggest at a minimum that you get some good rings and gap them accordingly..

Just my .02...

the engine in my 93 was just reringed I used a stock replacement set I got from a local carquest non file fit. the final ring gap was well within factory spec and I have no regret not geting file fit rings, in fact I'm glad I did not get file fit rings. the last two engines I put together had file fit rings and I do not feel they are worth the trouble.
Oh I do know that the original rings actualy had Less of a gap than the rings I put in... so actualy the rings from the dealer would probly have a tighter fit than rings from a parts store, unless the dealer gets them from the same manufactuer.
I am asuming you are having a machine shop hone the block? ether way make sure you clean the engine out real good for you will have some nice abrasive material ginding up your berings.
