GM 847 Too Radical?
GM 847 Too Radical?
I was wondering what you guys think about the GM 847 cam. I have a 355 LT1 and want to do ported heads with that cam and some 30 lb. injectors. Do you think this is too radical for a daily driver? I really dont care about driveability but only too much stress and it would wear out parts and break too fast. I can live with a big cam for daily driving but is it too big for the stress on parts. I know I would have to get better springs and such, But I'm thinking it may be wise to just port my heads and get a bigger TB or something and not worry about the cam. Would there be that big of a gain from my 224/230?

mine is fine, I daily drive her through rush hour traffic all day, once you learn how to drive then its easy as pie, tunning makes a night & day difference is all I have to say, but for me I could use a bit more drivability even though this is plenty, I'm saying this because I'm bumper to bumper traffic all day
If you're worried about reliability, then it won't be a problem. The
Crane cams have nice, slow ramp rates for a quiet, long-lasting valvetrain.
Of course, driveability will suffer. You'll lose some low-end, idle will be rough, and it will run hotter. If you can put up with that, then get it.
I had that cam in a carb'd, full-weight '89 Firebird with an 11/1 383, AFR 210's, Victor Jr., and SLP shorty headers and it ran 11.09 at 122.5 mph.

With a decent set of lifters, matched springs, titanium retainers, hardened pushrods, and some 1.6 rockers, you shouldn't have any trouble with wear. There are guys all over this forum who run that cam in their daily driver. As was previously mentioned, the fuel pump may be a problem after a while, but they sell replacement units for that for about ~$200 or so that can handle 800hp. I'd be impressed if you could hit that number with only the cam.

Kry - Don't do it halfway dude, if your going to go with a good cam like this one, do your valvetrain. Porting your heads, 30'lb injectors and bigger throttle body is not going to give you what a good cam will, sure anything helps but your out of sequence a little. Cam first, valve train, heads, intake, TB, injectors, etc etc. Start at the brain which is your cam.

847 is a great cam if you've got heads. awesome topend power. it might not be the best for a daily driver but it would put out great power if you had ported heads with your 355. you would definitely want to strengthen up your valvetrain a bit though, like these guys have already said. good luck, let us know what you do!

So your cooling system may be good enough to prevent it from running hotter, but the larger cam WILL lose low-end and idle quality.
My power brakes worked and it was tolerable, but definitely choppy.
