GM 847 questions

I know there has been a lot of talk about this cam and I'm thinking about using it in my 383 with 11:1 compression and 195cc AFR heads. However, I don't want a cam that has a high idle to it. What is everyone running there idle at and how much vacuum does it produce? Is everyones power brakes ok?

Peak hp rpm about 5800 from what I've been reading off of dynos correct. But how's the torque?

Thanks.

I run the cam and mine peakedaround 6600, idles around 800. extremely happy with the cam and just loves the spray. I personally think your runners will be a bit small(195) for the cubes but that is just my opinion, and your peak will be lower

So, your 350 peaked at 6600....so....on a 383....probably looking about 500 rpms lower which is perfect because I don't want to take it over 6500....after all this is a truck and weekend cruiser and the smaller runners will help with the torque factor and lowering rpm a little bit more as well.

And in your 350 it idles at 800....that's nice as well....I'm hoping I can get it to idle at 800-825 in my 383....maybe lower.

Just looking to get 400rwhp out of it.

Sounds like I got my answers....

jonsey sounds spot on. I had the 847 many moons ago in an L98....damn thing would scream when I had it carbed (spin all the way to 6500 easy), going back to tpi was a bad decision on my part, since it couldn't flow anywhere near enough cfm.....oh well lesson's learned early in like.

definitely a good choice as long as the top end can keep up

A word from history here. A hot, wild cam in a small small block is much milder as the cubes go up. The old 350 horse 350 cid cam had a very rough idle in a 283 and rough idle in a 327. So, what I'm getting at, is that a 847 will seem much milder in a 383 than it does in a 350. Yes, the 383 is only about 9% larger than a 350 but a 350 is only 7% larger than a 327.....

Point is, the 847 will be a stout, not at all wild cam in a 383. It'll idle nicely at 800 rpm and will pull strong to 6000+ rpm.

Yea...I'm following you. The original LT1, etc engines....brings back the times for a youngester.

I've seen several dynos of a 383 with 195cc heads and 11:1 compression make this cam peak about 5800-5900 rpms with a single plane EFI setup and about 6100 with a "mini-ram" intake.

I'll be going with the single plane in the truck.

400 rwhp should be no problem what so ever, I pull that with my 350 through my 9". I would expect 420 ish and very comparable torque number aswell

Agreed. I'm doing that with the 846 cam in my 350....and the 846 is the 847's little brother.

It should peak higher then 5800 if you have AFR heads on it, it will peak around 5800 on stock heads.

Like I said..that was from a dyno graph I saw of it....peaked at 5800 rpms and stayed flat to about 6400 rpm.

This was on a 383 with AFR heads.
