Gears
Gears
I've had this in the drivetrain section with no responses. Figured you guys would know anyway.
my rear blew out a while back while I was going around a turn. Everything in the differential was destroyed. I bought a torsen unit and had it installed. No issues with it. It has 2.73 gears.
How do I change the gears on it? I would like some 3.73
Sorry if its a stupid question, I don't know anything about it.

Re: Gears
With the Auburn rear the carrier series has to match the gears, or you have to buy special gears. Don't know if the Torsen has a similar requriement. Anything 3.08 or lower in the Auburn has a 2-series carrier. 3.73 gears require a 3-series carrier, or you have to buy a set of 3.73 gears made for the 2-series.
I personally would not attempt my own gear install, and I have been working on cars as a hobby for 50 years. One error and you end up with gears that howl like a banshee. And once they howl you may never get them set up right.
You would need a 3.73 ring and pinion (~$200)
You would need an install kit with new bearings, lube, limited slip additive (not sure if the Torsen requires that), crush sleeve, etc ($75 - 125 depending how complete)
Install will run $250-350.
You could try it yourself using one of the decent online videos that shows you how.

Re: Gears
What came in the 95 rear? I bought the torsen off ebay, don't know what it came out of, but the shop had no trouble installing it.
Ok I'll probably just leave the car stock. I have no clue about any of that stuff. Thanks for the response fred.

Re: Gears
And yes.....your first gear install shoud REALLY be supervised by someone with experience in installing gears.
If you take the car to a shop (Truck Stops are good
) they should charge you their hourly rate times 3 or 4 hours.
Best of luck!

Re: Gears
The shop I take mine to, I used to work for them. It is a trucking company but the owner and his friends build race cars. He loves his old camaros.I do everything to my car but I wouldn't attempt gears. I just trying to find out what I need to get to do it.
Any good deals on complete rears? Car does have traction control.
