How old are you? If you are under 20 then you'll probably opt for the 3:73s or 4:10s as it'll make the care feel quicker.....drawback is higher RPMs at highway speed and poor gas mileage. If you are older, say over 25, then some of that youthful constant pedal to the metal action will start to abate and the 3:42s are much better all around. Some will tell you there is not much of a difference between the 73s and 42s - BS. 300 rpms or so is a lot when you are listening to the engine all day on a long cruise at high highway speeds.
The higher number in the ratio, the better seat-of-the-pants feel from acceleration and less mileage and more noise. The lower number is better mileage and less noise.
This is an old ollld olllllllld debate. You really won't know what you want until you've been through a number of gear changes - like me. Went from the 2:49s in old car, to 3:73s (too much gear for me and too damn loud) then down to 3:23s (better mileage and less noise). Changed to a 12 bolt rear in the car and settled on 3:42s. This is where I am now and as far as I AM CONCERNED these are best all around. Gives you acceleration, decent cruise and in town mileage and doesn't drone so much in the compartment.
My mileage increased 4mpg going from 3:73s to 3:23s and stayed there with the 3:42s.

I have a 93 also. I have stock 3.23 gears so its a 3 series carrier. How hard is it to recalibrate the speedo on a 93 car? I heard you can't do it through programming. Also would it be wise to get a gear install kit? sorry to hijack!
If you have an A4, then go 3.73s....if you have a M6 like me, I'm going with 4.10s......You should let a shop do the gears
Vin, a hypertech pp or a custom tune from madz28 will correct for gear install as well as other upgrades if you choose. Definatley let a shop do the gears because of the precise calibrations while installing. I wouldnt do gears w/o the install kit and TA girdle! So that means 300 for the gears/kit and 125 for the girdle. Plus 5-7 hours of labor. All of this = one of the best seat of the pants mods you can do! Wheeeew my fingers hurt LOL
