Gear Swap
I just bought my '95Z last week and found out I have the horrible 2.73 gears. Anybody know what the best way (cheapest way) to get some 3.42 or 3.23's. Should I just get a completely new rear. I know a guy selling a 10-bolt out of an '86 IROC with 3.42's, will that work without breaking or compatability problems? I'm going to the track tonight for some stock times. I'll post how I do with those crappy gears.
TTT...
And I do need a new rear, because I have a two series carrier...it will be a lot cheaper just to get an entire rear end rather than buying Richmond 3.42s or 3.73s for a two series carrier, plus an installation package...

I had 2.73 in mine too. They came in all convertibles I believe. Anyway, I bought some used 3.42 Motive gears from another board member here for 100.00. SLP 3 series carrier for 100.00 and a new reluctor gear for 20.00. The install cost me about 200.00 and that included a new pinion bearing. So it cost me about 450 to have it done with the lube and all. It will cost use about 250.00 in just parts. But if you don't have a bearing press, dial indicators, ect. then pay the labor.

They were take off carriers from standard Z28 and Trans Am that they upgraded when doing the SS/Firhark conversions. Try here:

www.gearsareus.com You can get all the stuff you need "bearings shims gears " brandnew for 220 dollars ........thats the new gears and install kit and it is well worth it
Strange makes gears for both, whether it be a 2 or 3 series. So you can keep the 2 series carrier and get whatever gears you want. I've got the 2.73s too and will be moving up to 3.23s or 3.42s here soon.
