As mentioned in your other post...and LT4 starter is a step up from the LT1.

Thanks for the info about the LT4 starter.

I knew it was better, I never looked close enough in detail to see that it was a gear reduction mini starter.

Thanks!

I am looking at a CVR ProTorque Starter, or a ProForm Mini starter. They say they will perform up to a 18:1 compression.

I will keep everyone updated.

Might as well spend the money on the right parts to make sure the car drives for a long while.

I have a powermaster torquemaster starter capable of turning up to 18:1 compression. I got it from the performnce shop I order all my parts from for 150. It is the best starter I have ever owned. It has a gear reduction of like 4.40:1.

Theres really no reason to buy such a gear reduction starter without a high compression engine, a lt1 or lt4 starter will do just fine, id bet alot of the aftermarket starters will not hold up like a oem starter.

I have had the CVR ProTorque starter on my LT1 for 7 years. Its outlasted two stockers. My first stocker was replaced under warranty under 3 years from date of purchase. Second one (3 years old at the time) seemed to suck up all the power with the stroker (only 10.8:1), and extended the starting time by pulling too much power from the fuel system. Installled the CVR, and it started instantaneously. The CVR offers the advantage of being rotatable, to improve clearance from headers. That alone is enough to make me want to buy it. Throw in the under $150 price (now sold under the JEG's brand, among others) and I consider it a smart buy.

very good info indeed i change my point of view on mini starters with the price of that one and as well as it works as a oem starter is around the same price or more!

i have ran into some trouble with some mini/starters in the past but with your review of that type of starter i think i might have to make a change when i do the build on my motor, once again great info fred

JEG's part listing......

I did have to notch the corner of the mounting block a bit to clear the lip of the stock oil pan.

JEGS 10001 - JEGS Prostarter Starters

Product images may differ from actual product appearance.

Prostarter Starters have full ball bearing construction instead of bushings that can wear prematurely. They weigh only 10.5 pounds with an 80-90 amp draw. Billet aluminum adapters feature four adjustable mounting positions to allow more header or oil pan clearance (except 555-10002 and 555-10010). While others offer 3:1 gear reduction, Prostarters have 4.41:1 with cranking power for engines with as much as 15:1 compression. Their solenoid housings are sealed with O-rings for added protection.

Note: Bolts and shims are included with GM starters.
