Driver's side rear fender, near the gas fill pipe. There's a plastic panel on the fender liner for access.

Re: gas smell....

Verify it isn't something simple like a hose came off or is damaged.

Re: gas smell....

Where does the fuel smell the strongest.... front of the car or the back? A canister problem will show up in the back. Most common problem would be rotted hoses connecting the top of the fuel tank to the canister. Unfortunately, those lines are impossible to see with the tank in place. You need to try and pin down the location before you start taking anything apart.

When you remove your fuel cap, it there ever any pressure in the tank that vents when you open the cap?

If the smell is in the front of the car, start inspecting for leaks in the fuel lines.

If there is none, then what's your diagnosis?

Might be a sign that the hoses between the fuel tank and the pressure relief valve are cracked. That would keep pressure from building up in the tank. With a closed system like ours, it isn't unusual to get a bit of pressure out of the tank when you open the cap.

I had a problem with a loose hose after my fuel tank was removed and reinstallled (to add a sump). When I stopped at a light with the window open, the smell of racing fuel was enough to bring tears to my eyes. Simply repairing the leaky hose solved the problem.
