Funny things happen when you unplug the MAF

Today was a warm and humid day, with a little bit of drizzling rain. I had to spend a good hour and a half in bumper to bumper traffic. I encountered the low RPM hesitation, which really surprised me. I've never had it happen before. I also noticed that my temps were right at the half way mark, and even with the fans on, would stay there.

I got home, and figured what the hey, I'll unplug the MAF. I didn't really notice any more speed, but I did notice a bit more responsiveness and oddly enough, my temps went back down to normal. Right around the first quarter mark.

As well, it seemed to not want to rev past 3000RPM.

So, does anyone know how to get rid of the MAF entirely?

Unplugging your MAF forces your PCM to refer to the MAP sensor only, which is not as accurate. However, if your MAF is dirty or damaged, then your PCM would be receiving bad data, which is why it ran better unplugged.

Take the MAF out of the car and inspect the wires that sit in the airstream. Are they damaged? If not, get some contact cleaner and carefully wash the dirt/crap off. Reinstall and lay 40 feet of rubber...errr... I mean test drive the car.

Yeah, I never knew about the speed density mode until a couple of weeks ago.

I got a code, but it ran better

I'll clean the **** out tomorrow.

Should I descreen or no? Hrm..

Don't descreen! Youre better off not to. If you want to see some of the arguments on this subject, search for "maf screen" and be amazed. I suggest not doing it. I have the screen in and I'm slowly saving up for a granitelli motorsports maf sensor. Very slowly. Those sombucks cost 350. Ouch... I'd rather have roller rockers.
