Fuel related problem Need HELP FAST!

My friend just called me, he has a 97 Z28. He was letting his girl friend drive it and she ran it out of gas. The car now has gas and will start and die within 5 or so seconds when it dies it sputters out.

I figured it was the fuel filter, but could it be the fuel pump?

What else to check for. He will have his dad on the way soon, and I'm sure they can try to get a fuel pressure reading then.

All help is GREATLY appreciated.

If the pump is like it is in the 3rd gens the pump could very well be ruined. In a 3rd gen if you run it out of fuel it can lock up the pump...I'm pretty sure its the same type of pump...but I could be wrong.

Do you have pull the gas tank to get the Fuel Pump?

Yes you do...and its not necessarily pleasant. If you have the equipment to do it and have done it before its no biggie but the first time I switched an in tank pump it took a couple hours.

Well, not necessarily. It can be done by cutting an access panel, althought most people will highly disagree with this method.
Is there a site with an access panel write up? LOL!

i've had my pump die and i've run out of gas quite a few times...

relaxe, if the pump was dead, the car wouldnt start at all...when that baby goes the way of the dinosaurs, it REALLY goes...

well, you should try turning the key to the "on" position...this will start the fuel pump...this will fill up the fuel line (if they're not filled up after you put gas in it).
you can pull out one of the injectors if you think it's the fuel pump...it wouldnt be pushing any gas....

push the gas peddle, and keep it down for a few seconds as you have the key in the on pisition....i know it's not a friggin carburetor...

when i run out of gas, i push the gas a few times before starting it...sometimes, it takes about 5 tries before it catches....

once again, if ur pump was dead, there would be no fuel for it to catch...

it's possible that since she let it run out of gas, the crap that was at the bottom of the tank clogged your fuel line/fuel filter...

oh yeah, changing the fuel pump is a pain in the As$...

Rage I'm gonna have to respectfully disagree with you. While its true in many cases the pump will just lock up its not true of all cases. I point to my friends truck in tank pump similiar if not the same was the one in an LT1 or L98 car. The thing would start up breifly and then just quit after a couple seconds. Switched the pump out for a new one and it was good as new. After priming the pump by turning the key to the on position as you stated, it started on the third try.

irocmaniac, i was talkin about what i've seen from the two pumps that've gone out...and i had to change....i was shocked that they just died, but they did, without warning...

they're all different...

he should pull out one of the injectors and check for fuel...
