Here's the guide I made for the trapdoor method. Tin snips will also work.

I used a thin piece of aluminum and very short sheet metal screws and RTV to cover the hole. Here's a picture of the install I did on a friends 96 Z28:

Re: fuel pump replacement (trap door)

I used a chris alston fuel door on my car. I just lined it with thin weather stripping no smell at all. makes for a ten minute fuel pump change.

Here is a link with a pic of the door I used. It is the larger one obviously. Im out of town at the moment but I will shoot some pics of it installed on monday.
They call it access door. I will get the dimensions of the door if you want them... I have to find my catalog first I guess

That's exactly what I did but I had to cut a little more over the disconnects. How did you get to them with out doing that?

Small hands? It was pretty easy. A very long needle-nose pliers and a screwdriver, and all of them came off very easily.

Re: fuel pump replacement (trap door)

Go by Ramair's link below. It is a solid method. Just use real short sheet metal screws and RTV. That's good enough. 10 screws will do it. Round your edges and corners for a stronger cover.
